Both Iran and the US have agreed to establish a High-Level Committee for political oversight during future talks, said the joint statement.

The US government's acceptance of the luxury 747 from Qatar raised questions about whether it was an inappropriately expensive gift.

"Obviously, we know that what we've done today is historical for the country, our first one in the World Cup, and to do it in that fashion is really amazing," leading goalscorer Jonathan David said.

According to a Qatari report, the talk of an approaching agreement between Washington and Tehran was accompanied by a media campaign against Qatar.

Iran will soon begin implementing a long-planned electricity grid connection with Qatar, Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi said, adding that Tehran is also studying similar links with other Gulf states.

"The situation in Washington right now is a very serious problem; the question is how it will be translated into action," said Yaki Dayan, the former Israeli consul in Los Angeles.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun praised Lebanon's inclusion in the agreement, noting that the people of Lebanon look forward to a "definitive end to the cycle of violence."
