"Honduras has a long history of friendship with the State of Israel and the Jewish people. We agreed to work to strengthen bilateral relations for the benefit of both countries," Sa'ar said.

Honduran presidential candidate Salvador Nasralla claimed that US President Donald Trump's surprise endorsement of the conservative candidate, Nasry Asfura, had flipped the race.

"After nearly four years of pain, waiting, and difficult trials, my husband, Juan Orlando Hernandez, returned to being a free man," said Hernandez's wife, Ana Garcia.

The Honduran election faces a highly polarized climate amid fraud accusations. The ruling party's Rixi Moncada suggested she might not recognize the official results.

"The man who is standing up for Democracy and fighting against Maduro is Tito Asfura, the Presidential Candidate of the National Party," US President Trump said in a social media post.

"The decision of the government of Honduras to call their ambassador for consultations disregards Israel's right to defend itself," the Foreign Ministry said.

In 1950, Jerusalem became the capital of Israel. Now, other countries are slowly starting to recognize it as such.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan said Hernandez received millions of dollars from drug trafficking organizations, including from the former leader of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, "El Chapo" Guzman.
