Sepp Blatter backed calls to boycott the US hosted World Cup, as international soccer figures raised concerns over travel bans and immigration policies under the Trump administration.

It's unclear exactly how social media reviews would be conducted or what would trigger the government to interfere with a foreigner's entry into the country.

"Our study shows that what might appear as harmless banter is, in fact, a vehicle for normalising antisemitism," said Dr Itoiz Rodrigo-Jusué.

Complaints by the football associations of Iran and Egypt highlight tensions between World Cup rules promoting anti-discrimination, inclusivity and neutrality on political and social matters.

As with many Islamic countries, homosexuality is outlawed in Iran and punishable by death. Many LGBTQ+ Iranians have fled the country, looking for asylum in the United States or the Middle East.

If UEFA decided to ban Israel, it would put the organization on a collision course with the government of the US, co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup, which strongly opposes such an action.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the event an "encouraging development" since women were banned from attending a previous 2022 World Cup qualifier.
