Not so sleepless in Jerusalem

The Social Survey conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics among persons aged 20 and over in 2017 examined, among other things, the sleep habits of the participants. The survey results show that overall, Jerusalem residents sleep well. Some 28% of Jerusalem residents responded that they slept for eight hours or more each night, compared with 25% in Israel, 24% in Haifa and Rishon Lezion, 19% in Petah Tikva and only 17% in Tel Aviv. On the other side of the sleeping scale, only 10% of the residents of Jerusalem testified that they slept every night for only five hours or less. This compares to 17% in Israel. Among the large cities, 21% of the residents of Haifa responded that they sleep five hours or less each night, 17% of the residents of Tel Aviv, and 16% of the residents of Rishon Lezion and Petah Tikva. Among the residents of Jerusalem, the survey indicates that there is a significant difference in the hours of sleep between Jews and Arabs: Among the Jews, 16% replied that they sleep for more than eight hours a night, whereas the figure for the Arabs was 49%. A similar trend was observed with the people who do not sleep many hours, when 12% of the Jews replied that they slept less than five hours a night, compared with 5% of the Arabs. Naturally, a higher percentage of city residents that do not participate in the labor force answered that they slept more than eight hours a night (34%), compared with those who are employed (22%). Since the survey indicates that Jerusalemites sleep well at night, it is no surprise that when respondents were asked about their fatigue during the day, Jerusalem is at the bottom of the list: only 43% of Jerusalem residents reported that during the day they feel very tired or somewhat tired. This compares to 54% of all residents of Israel, 63% in Haifa and Petah Tikva, 56% in Rishon Lezion and 49% in Tel Aviv. Residents of Jerusalem reported difficulties sleeping in a smaller percentages than the average in Israel: 21% of Jerusalem residents responded that they find it difficult to sleep two or three times a week or more, compared to 26% of the residents of Israel, 32% of Haifa and Petah Tikva, and 26% of Tel Aviv residents.
